This is a twenty acre square tank surrounded by numerous Shiva mandapams and is believed to the confluence of nine river goddesses. A huge 10 day festival akin to Maha Kumbh happens once in 12 years where it is believed that Lord Shiva and the river goddesses come to revitalize the water in the tank.. The puranas also talk about this tank and the benefits of bathing in its waters. To quote Shiva the god of destruction of the Hindu trinity states “Let all of you this very day go to Kumbakonam, a spot dear to me and to Vishnu the God of Protection of the Hindu trinity, and bathe in the nectar full tank created by the directions of the Parabrahman.
